Pinewood Derby (Tundra thru Adult Categories)

Mark your calendars for Friday, August 15th from 4:30-8:00p.m. for our 8th Annual Pinewood Derby and Family Fun Night! We will have our Pinewood Derby Races, Bounce Houses, Games, Snow Cones and Yummy Food for all of our families to enjoy. This event has been a huge success each summer and we are all looking forward to an amazing night this year. The Pinewood Derby was first started in California as a racing event for Cub Scouts in the Boy Scouts of America. Children, with the help of parents, build their own cars from a block of wood. The purpose of the race is to build stronger family relationships. We know that parents will need to do the cutting of the car, but we strongly encourage the children to design and decorate their own cars. Parents may enter their own car in our Adult Division. Please note that you must make a new car together. You may not enter a car that has was previously made or that has raced in ANY Pinewood Derby Race. The kit you have contains a block of wood, plastic wheels and nail-type axles. Please refer to the attached sheet with some helpful information when building your car. It is important that you read and follow all of the rules that have been specified. There will be an Official Derby Check-in on Thursday, August 14th. Please note that this is one day prior to the race. Each car will need to be in its own shoebox or a shoebox sized rubbermaid container, labeled with your child's name/class/grade. Our derby theme is "The Mystery of the Missing Pinewood Derby Trophy." Listed below are the categories that you may choose to have your car compete in....all cars compete in the Maximum Velocity Speed Category. *HINT! HINT! HINT! * The Judges like to see creativity in the design and like to see that the child painted/decorated their own car. The Non-Speed Categories this year are.... ~ Best Spy Movie Themed Car ~Best Television Private-Eye Car ~Best Car with Gadgets ~Best Car Representing a Television Police Detective ~Best Car Representing a Literary Detective ~Best Car Representing a "Child" Detective ~Best "Not a Car" Car ~Best CDCW Themed Car ~Best in Show - Child AND Best in Show - Adult For our "Maximum Velocity 8.0" races, we will have one winner for the fastest car in each Division. (Tundra, Jungle, Desert, Rainforest, Rising 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th/6th, Teen and the much anticipated Adult Division. Trophies will be awarded to the winner in each division. Those winners (excluding the Adult and Teen Winners) will compete for the Grand Prize Trophy. On Thursday, August 14th from 12:00-1:00 and 4:00- 6:00, we will have the "Official Derby Check-In." Each car must be registered and weighed in to be eligible for competition. If your car needs to be modified in any way to meet the race specifications, it must be done by 6:00 that evening. Come prepared with tools and extra weights just in case:) Remember that the cars cannot exceed 5 ounces. Our official derby scale will be available that entire week at the main desk. This will allow for you to check the weight of your car prior to the official check-in. All cars will remain in a secure location at CDCW until race time on Friday afternoon. Remember to bring your car in a labeled box. Don't be family can create an incredible car! There are lots of websites and books at the library that can assist you with planning your car. We highly recommend using those resources. We are looking forward to another great race! Good Luck! :) Yvonne, Barbara and Sarah
